Protecting the Rainforest
Over 20 years ago, we learned about the role that trees play in combating climate change globally, and ever since we have been committed to planting and saving trees. In 1990 we launched our Trees for Life appeal, with a pledge to plant one million trees. With support from our customers we reached and surpassed that target within 10 years, and have since planted a total of three million trees in tea and coffee growing countries, as well as here in the UK.
Since 2009 we have been working in partnership with the the United Bank of Carbon, the Rainforest Foundation UK and the University of Leeds School of Earth Sciences to protect an area of rainforest the size of Yorkshire. To date we’ve raised and donated over £750,000 for conservation projects in the Ene Valley of Peru, helping the Ashaninka indigenous people to develop sustainable livelihoods while protecting their forest home.
